The new year offers fresh opportunities to make a difference and our enthusiasm continues into 2020 with a commitment to build a second school in the same community. Once again, burton + BURTON will be partnering with Beacon Technologies, Inc. to accomplish this exciting charitable mission. In 2019, after the successful sale of 600 baskets and the construction of the first school, 300 people from the community attended the dedication, including the Archbishop of Rwanda and local government officials. In addition to the school, the surrounding area was transformed into a special space for community gatherings. Read more about the school dedication here.
As the new year commences, we are so thrilled to debut our latest collection of handwoven goods! With 12 new and exciting designs, you’ll be sure to find the perfect gift. Each design captures the spirit of Rwanda and the artisan who crafted it. Ranging from traditionally patterned woven trivets to elegantly shaped, lidded peace baskets, each creation was constructed with extreme attention to detail and love. Designers considered trend colors for 2020 including onyx, chartreuse, blush, and of course the color of the year, classic blue, to create vibrant color stories that complement the textures of the baskets, creating one-of-a-kind collectibles that will be treasured for years to come.

Every handwoven product was made in a women’s cooperative in the small Rwandan village of Gitarama using natural sisal fibers and native grasses, then hand-signed by the artisan. This exciting initiative offers opportunities for Rwandan women to earn a steady income and escape gender-based violence, inequality, and discrimination. These meaningful jobs allow them to provide for their families and move them from crisis and poverty to stability and economic self-sufficiency.
