International Balloon Month

September is upon us and that means it is officially time to celebrate International Balloon Month! Ten years ago, International Balloon Month was initiated as a time to celebrate the joy balloons bring to our lives and highlight the need for everyone to use and dispose of balloons responsibly.

Georgia Balloon Month Proclamation

For a decade, Maxine Burton, president and founder, and Bob Burton, CEO, of burton + BURTON® have spearheaded the initiative to draw attention to “Balloon Month” in the State of Georgia via a balloon proclamation issued by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. International Balloon Month seeks to raise awareness of the joy of balloons as well as to spotlight the economic impact the multi-billion-dollar balloon industry has on the state of Georgia and the world.

Green Comes in Every Color

The theme for this year’s International Balloon Month is Green Comes in Every Color. This concept is focused on the industry’s collective commitment to promote wise, responsible decisions regarding balloons, thereby protecting the environment.

The challenge set forth by The Balloon Council is focused on youth groups, schools, community organizations and businesses coming together to take the #BeBalloonSmart Pledge following the Smart Balloon Practices. A prize will be awarded to the group with the most pledges. Pledge cards and contest details are available here. First Place winners in each category will receive a special gift basket filled with the latest balloons and related items from our sponsors worth up to $200! Winners will be announced at the FLOAT 2020 Convention in January.


The #BeBalloonSmart pledge follows The Balloon Council’s motto “Don’t let go: Inflate. Weight. Enjoy.” and includes these practices:

  • Do not release any balloons into the air–they can become tangled in power lines and turn into litter.
  • Keep balloons secured with a string and tied to a weight.
  • Children with balloons should always be monitored. Children under eight (8) years of age can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons.
  • When finished with balloons, pop them and properly dispose of them.
  • Despite the funny voice helium can give you, it should never be inhaled.


 The #LiftUpSomebody campaign, sponsored by The Balloon Council (TBC), encourages people to post on social media and educate them on how fun balloons can be. For 2019, there is another contest being held to encourage others to lighten someone’s mood with the joy of balloons. Deadline for submissions is September 30, 2019. Prizes will be awarded to the best photos in the following categories: best lift up or act of kindness photo, best community outreach photo, best photo with children, best Green Comes in Every Color themed photo, and best promotion of Smart Balloon Practices.   1. Post a photo on TBC’s FacebookInstagram or Twitter (@balloonsliftup)
  2. Use the hashtag #LiftUpSomebody to be automatically entered into the contest.
